BASIC TOOL LIST

FOR BEGINNING CARPENTER APPRENTICES

Everyday

All apprentices must come to school every day wearing hard-soled work boots, long white pants, and a long or short-sleeved shirt. Your pants and your shirt should not have holes in them, should fit you comfortably, but should not be baggy or over-sized. The “saggin’” look will not be tolerated.  Bring a hard hat and clear safety glasses if you have them.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

You will need a 25’ tape measure.  (Do not buy an “easy read” tape measure  with the fractions of the inch actually printed on the  tape.)

Thursday and Friday

     You will need these tools:

(If your contractor gives you a tool list, buy the tools on that list in addition to the following tools.  Please bring that list to school with you.)

  1.     Straight claw framing hammer

  2.     Utility knife, retractable blade

  3.     Hand saw (Shark-tooth, or an 8 pt. preferred)

  4.     Chalk box with chalk

  5.     Nail puller (cat’s paw) and/or flat bar, pry bar

  6.     Metal speed square  (not plastic, Craftsman and Swanson are good brands)

  7.     Level  (maximum 30” long)

  8.     Tin snips or Aviation snips (straight-cut, yellow- handled preferred)

  9.     8” Crescent wrench

10.  Wood chisel

11.  Leather or canvas pouch  (if you don’t own a pouch , wait until after the first day of class before you buy one.  We will discuss the pros and cons of different types of pouches on the first day.)
